TEHRAN (MNA) – Parent murder rate has increased by 3% in the country, deputy police investigator warned here on Saturday.

Recent official figures showed that in comparison to the year 1386 (March 2007- March 2008), there has been a 3% increase in parent murder by children in 1387 (ended March 20, 2009), Mostafa Rajabi said at a press conference.
He called addiction the main reason behind such upward trend in the murder rate.
Murders rooted in family disputes soared by 10 percent over the last year (1387), Rajabi said, adding that compared with 1386, there was no increase in murder rate by relatives in 1387.
A total of 16% of murders in Iran are committed by husbands, 6% by wives, 12% by parents, and 11% by the children, the police official averred.
“There was no fall in the number of killing husbands by wives, while the number of wives killing by husbands has dropped in 1387,” Rajabi explained, adding that in comparison to 1386 child murder rate also reduced by 1 percent in 1387.
He also said that the country’s murder rate rose by 11% over the last year.
He referred to a 10% rise in detecting murders and said, “An estimated 86% of murders have been detected by police officers in 1387.”
“Compared with 1386, the number of female murder victims climbed 23% in 1387,” Rajabi noted, explaining that most murderers were aged between 20 and 30.
He also added that the detection of armed robberies rose by 83% but “armed robberies declined by 15% in 1387.”
According to Rajabi, there was a 39% decrease in bank robberies and 6% fall in kidnappings in 1387.
